| Log Cabin Kits - Foundation & Subfloor
Gravel is usually layed down specifically where the foundation floor will be constructed. The installation of a poured wall foundation begins with the contractor erecting forms, into which concrete is directly poured. The forms are removed only after the concrete is completely dried and cured. The entire process can take from 3 to 5 days. For block walls, a masonry contractor is responsible for laying several courses of block over a specific time frame, that allows adequate drying time for the mortar that secures the blocks. Most foundations are then treated on the outside with waterproofing agents. Gravel is also often placed around the outside of the foundation to allow water to drain away from the foundation wall. Log homes do not generally require a special foundation or sub floor.
SUBFLOOR After the foundation is complete, carpenters then begin to work on the sub floor. Floor joists, generally 2x8's or 2x10's are placed on top of a system of girder beams and support posts. Following is plywood decking or OSB board that is then secured on top of the joists. The sub floor must be complete before the package arrives. This is the time that the trucks begin to arrive! CRANE TRUCKS A crane is required to remove the logs and set them into place. The hiring of the crane truck is the responsibility of the home owner, or contractor. Due to the large size of the logs used in handcrafted construction, a crane must be on location. It is a good idea to contact several crane companies in your area and request quotes. The crane should have a minimum lifting capacity of 17-1/2 tons and boom length of 80 feet or more. Most cranes run at approx. $100.00 per hour, both in the U.S. and Canada. An average sized home takes approximately 18-24 hours of crane time to re-assemble. The crane company needs log lifting tongs and various lifting slings.
